Arch Thompson -
Flutologist (C Flute,
alto flute and piccolo)
Bio
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Arch Thompson is a gifted flutist, composer/arranger and performer who upholds a rich and diverse musical tradition that extends from the shores of the Caribbean Islands and on to North, Central and South America.
Flutologist Arch Thompson began his musical journey at the age of twelve. In High School, he began playing the flute. When he was 16, he said his father would take him to clubs where he would sit in with the band. He remembers standing online with other musicians waiting to have a turn on stage. His father was his spokesperson at the clubs for his music, and the club "Jam Sessions" were his inspiration.
Arch attended and studied music at City College in L.A. It was also around this time that he heard the music of John Coltrane. He said Coltrane's "Love Supreme" raised his consciousness, and he began playing his own "music within." While a member of the U.S. Army Band, a chance opportunity arose for him to play with a salsa band. This introduced him to a number of Latin artists and awakened an interest in Latin music. This interest launched him on a musical odyssey which took him to Puerto Rico, New York and finally to DC.
While in New York, Arch studied intensely with Harold Jones, a premiere flute instructor with the Manhatten School of Music and Arch continued to focus on his professional growth. While studying and performing in New York, he began to synthesize his unique musical style, which blends classical, jazz, funk and Latin into a sensational sound that moves from the tranquil and beautiful to a driving, pulsing, rhythmic fire that will have you dancing and singing to the captivating call of the Flute.
His Music
Arch believes that the Creator has provided him with a divine gift through which he can transform and heal all those individuals whom his music reaches. In his hands, the flute becomes an enchanting and magical instrument that purifies the mind and uplifts the spirit and is an experience that none should miss.
After arriving in DC, Arch immersed himself in the diverse musical atmosphere of the city. Throughout his musical odyssey, Arch held the hope of recording and releasing his own music, and this became a reality in 2004, when he released his first CD, "Flute Visions" on the CD Baby label - now available online at
Bandcamp.
Arch performs a wide range of music from classical to hip-hop, but he is always connected to, and performs Latin Jazz. He can be heard performing in venues in the DC area and other venues on the east coast.
Arch 's musical versatility allows him to perform with almost any musical group - from classical to Hip-Hop. In the DC area, Arch performs solo, but is more commonly seen with his own music groups, The Arch Thompson Trio, Flute Visions and Visions of Jazz. He is a standard component of The Sabroso Latin Jazz Ensemble, The ElectroKoustic band and the TNT Duo (comprised of him and guitarist Roberto Tyson). He often performs with Joe Falero and DC Latin Jazz All Stars, and several other groups.
